For the vast majority of patients I have seen since I started my practice in 1999, back pain of all varieties have responded very well to acupuncture treatment, provided the cause is not a structural one. Non-structural back pain is likely the type you have if you have not been involved in an accident or trauma that caused physical damage to the spine or spinal cord.

Examples of structural problems would be things like ruptured discs, crushed vertebrae and pinched nerves due to narrow outlets in the vertebral body.

Soft tissue pain (for which acupuncture is great) include things like strained back muscles, tight muscles that cause pain, pain that occurs after over exertion. Often people have semi-chronic back pain that originates from soft-tissue injury or strain. This is the most common type of back pain and the kind you most likely have if you haven’t had a serious accident or spinal trauma.

For most patients, a course of 4-8 treatments will greatly relieve or eliminate back pain…it just depends upon the severity of the pain, and how long it has been bothersome.

Granted I have had a few patients who did not respond to acupuncture for migraines, but I can count those people on one hand.

Acupuncture works by helping the body’s natural ability to heal kick into high gear. In the case of migraines, using acupuncture is one way to guide the body back toward peak health and balance.

Some of the reasons we notice imbalances include stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, anger/frustration and a host of other “modern” complaints. All of these can work together to create an imbalance in the body that is causes overwhelming and often debilitating migraine headaches.

Although we cannot measure this force, this chi, we can certainly recognize that in its absence, life ceases to exist.

From and energetic medical perspective, chi flows through your body and directs all physical functions. You might say that chi is “behind” all physical health and vitality.

When chi flow gets constricted or imbalanced (often through physical, emotional and mental stresses), pain, discomfort and/or disease are all possible results that will follow from this decreased energy flow.

The purpose of acupuncture is to strategically place sterile needles (more like fine wires, really), into specific places on the body that are known to redirect your chi, and help you re-balance your entire body.  By balancing your chi, the physical body will regain its balance and vitality, because the energetic blockages causing pain, discomfort or disease have been removed.

Acupuncture has a very high success rate for what I would call non-critical health imbalances. If you have migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, back or neck pain, irregular menstrual cycles–just to name a few–then acupuncture is a great medicine.
